The Mermaid’s Tavern

The Mermaid’s Tavern is a monthly online folk club — first Sundays, 2 to 4 Eastern. Singers from across North America, the UK, and Europe gather to sing together: chanteys, ballads, seasonal songs, the occasional deep-cut surprise. It is participatory, not performance. You can just listen if you want to , and we always invite new singers.

The Tavern has been meeting since 2020. In that time we have grown a community of singers who take the tradition seriously and enjoy each other’s company — from session veterans to people who learned their first chantey last year. There is no required level of experience, no gatekeeping about what counts as folk. If you love old songs and want to be in a room where other people love them too, you belong here.

The sessions are well steered, with no idle chat – and yet there’s always time for a cordial welcome. The host’s respect for the participants goes hand-in-voice with the sense of mutual trust that this engenders. Singers therefore experience a feeling of being valued, not least for adding value to the shared experience.
